Conservation of Populations, Species, and Ecosystems
Ecological and/or Genetic Issues in Conservation
I am interested in the environmental implications of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) as it pertains to One Health. At present, extensive research has been conducted on CWD transmission geographically and through direct species interactions. However, the role of soils in prion disease transmission is vastly understudied, especially in field settings outside of the laboratory. Thus, many unanswered questions still remain. My MS research will investigate the complex interactions of prion disease contamination and persistence within the soil matrix. We aim to investigate the patterns of prion disease dispersal and risk using a combination of field, laboratory, and mapping techniques from a known CWD positive carcass dumpsite in Beltrami County, MN.
